Manifesto for Post-Materialist Science

A group of scientists have joined to propose a new manifesto for a post-materialist science and published this manifesto at Manifesto on the Opensciences.org website.

From its inception,  science has continually evolved because of a fundamental reason: the accumulation of empirical evidence that could not be accommodated by entrenched views. The resulting changes have often been minor, but sometimes they have been titanic,  as in the quantum-relativistic revolution of the early decades of the 20th century. Many scientists believe a similar transition is currently required, because the materialistic focus that has dominated science in the modern era cannot account for an ever- increasing body of empirical findings in the domain of consciousness and spirituality. The following Manifesto for a Post- Materialist Science by a group of contemporary scholars and researchers attempts to visualise what an emerging scientific view may look like.

Larry Dossey, MD, Executive Editor, Explore, September/October 2014, Vol. 10, No. 5

Put very simply, Post-Materialist science assumes that mind, or consciousness is primary and that physical reality is an epiphenomenon of consciousness/mind. The human error has been to confuse the ego, which the brain fabricates by the action of thought, with consciousness. It is the human ego that has fabricated the duality of physical matter and the metaphysical.  It is the human mind/ego which created religion that in all its forms is ultimately divisive.

It is not a new idea either, but one that has been rediscovered.

So if you want to change the world, all you need do is change yourself, but not others.

It isn’t that the means justify the end, or that the end justifies the means, but that the means are the end.

About Louis Hissink

Retired diamond exploration geologist. I spent my professional life looking for mineral deposits, found some, and also located a number of kimberlites in NSW and Western Australia. Exploration geology is the closest one can get to practicing the scientific method, mineral exploration always being concerned with finding anomalous geophysical or geochemical data, framing a model and explanation for the anomaly and then testing it with drilling or excavation. All scientific theories are ultimately false since they invariably involved explaining something with incomplete extant knowledge. Since no one is omniscient or knows everything, so too scientific theories which are solely limited to existing knowledge. Because the future always yields new data, scientific theories must change to be compatible with the new data. Thus a true scientist is never in love with any particular theory, always knowing that when the facts change, so too must he/she change their minds.
