Global Warming Imaginals

Jo Nova has published an interesting graph on her website as well as publishing it as an advertisement in The Australian newspaper.

The we have a standard meteorological thermometer for use in a Stephenson Screen

Met Thermometer

The thermometer has temperature marks repeated at 0.5 Degrees Celsius intervals, so the most accurate reading would be 0.5 +/-0.25 degrees Celsius, or half the distance in the white spaces between the lines.

Note that the balloon and satellite datasets have a variation of +/- ~ 0.15 Degrees Celsius.

You cannot read a meteorological thermometer to that accuracy.

The measured temperature variation is less than the intrinsic error of the thermometer; it is thus a mathematical artefact and hence spurious.

Put in other words, there has not been any global warming during the period covered by the datasets.

So what is going on, part from an infatuation with numerology?

When belief trumps physical reality, then we are dealing with pathological science.

About Louis Hissink

Retired diamond exploration geologist. I spent my professional life looking for mineral deposits, found some, and also located a number of kimberlites in NSW and Western Australia. Exploration geology is the closest one can get to practicing the scientific method, mineral exploration always being concerned with finding anomalous geophysical or geochemical data, framing a model and explanation for the anomaly and then testing it with drilling or excavation. All scientific theories are ultimately false since they invariably involved explaining something with incomplete extant knowledge. Since no one is omniscient or knows everything, so too scientific theories which are solely limited to existing knowledge. Because the future always yields new data, scientific theories must change to be compatible with the new data. Thus a true scientist is never in love with any particular theory, always knowing that when the facts change, so too must he/she change their minds.
