Misapplication of Coriolis Effect

This will be a short note, because it is intrinsically so.

The Coriolis effect is observed between two Newtonian objects or bodies, one of which is in a rotating frame of reference. Independent objects can move individually without any physical connection to the other.

The Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, mantle, outer core and inner core are not Newtonian objects because none is a separate independent body or object.

They are all parts of the same Newtonian object, the Earth. All are also in the same rotating reference frame.

Therefore any circular motion observed in the atmosphere and oceans are not due to the Coriolis Effect, but due to an external forcing such as the conduction of plasma Birkeland currents between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere.

About Louis Hissink

Retired diamond exploration geologist. I spent my professional life looking for mineral deposits, found some, and also located a number of kimberlites in NSW and Western Australia. Exploration geology is the closest one can get to practicing the scientific method, mineral exploration always being concerned with finding anomalous geophysical or geochemical data, framing a model and explanation for the anomaly and then testing it with drilling or excavation. All scientific theories are ultimately false since they invariably involved explaining something with incomplete extant knowledge. Since no one is omniscient or knows everything, so too scientific theories which are solely limited to existing knowledge. Because the future always yields new data, scientific theories must change to be compatible with the new data. Thus a true scientist is never in love with any particular theory, always knowing that when the facts change, so too must he/she change their minds.

One Response to Misapplication of Coriolis Effect

Yep, I agree. I think we’ll all be discovering soon that all weather is caused by our electrical connection to the sun, via Birkeland currents, which spiral within their magnetic fields. The electrical force is 10^39 times more powerful than gravity. And within a Birkeland current, the electric force falls off at the rate of 1/√r rather than 1/r².

“Thunderstorms are not electricity generators, they are passive elements in an interplanetary circuit, like a self-repairing leaky condenser. The energy stored in the cloud ‘condenser’ is released as lightning when it short-circuits. The short-circuits can occur either within the cloud or across the external resistive paths to Earth or the ionosphere. The charge across the cloud ‘condenser’ gives rise to [spiraling] violent vertical electrical winds within the cloud, not vice versa.”

This view accords with a recent report (17 November 2003) in Geophysical Review Letters by Joseph Dwyer of the Florida Institute of Technology, which says that according to conventional theory electrical fields in the atmosphere simply cannot grow large enough to trigger lightning. “The conventional view of how lightning is produced is wrong.” And so “the true origin of lightning remains a mystery.”

Water vapor in rising air cools and condenses to forms clouds. The conventional explanation for rising air relies upon solar heating. The electrical weather model has an additional galactic energy source (the same that powers the Sun) to drive the movement of air. It is the same energy source that drives ferocious high-level winds on the giant outer planets, where [radiant] solar energy is extremely weak. Once the water vapor condenses into water droplets it is more plausible that millions of tons of water can remain suspended kilometres above the Earth by electrical means, rather than by thermal updraughts. The clouds would act to reduce thermals.”
