The Religious Mind and Confirmation Bias

One of the best climate websites in the internet is Tony Heller’s “Steve Goddard’s Real Science”, now simplied to ‘Real Science’. Until 2003 Tony Heller was a global warming alarmist, when he changed his mind after realising the physical facts contradicted the prevailing theory.

He has put a video of his presentation in Omaha to Doctors For Disaster Preparedness here, which is well worth watching.

The Guardian Newspaper has recently headlined this June being the 14th month of record break9ing temperatures, and I quote:

Nasa’s Walt Meir said the global temperatures have been exacerbated by extreme temperatures over the Arctic. Warm temperatures there are pushing up the global average, as well a causing record-low amounts of sea ice.

“It has been a record year so far for global temperatures, but the record high temperatures in the Arctic over the past six months have been even more extreme,” Meier said. “This warmth as well as unusual weather patterns have led to the record-low sea ice extents so far this year.”

Except that Arctic sea ice is, ah, rather extensive for this time of the year.

and a boat full of climate clowns is presently stuck in unexpected ice at Murmansk in Russia. Apparently the Arctic is supposed to be ice-free this year, 2016. According to Global Warming theory, that is.

What all this data shows is entrenched confirmation bias, an action where the data are changed to fit the theory that cannot be wrong. This is also another example of the religious mind in action where authority cannot be challenged. They really, truly believe it and because the theory has to be right, then the data must be wrong.

The global warming meme is politically driven, and like all true believers, where the end justfies then means, it is quite permissable to change the data to ensure noble ends.

The religious are well meaning, but there’s no point being sincerely stupid.

About Louis Hissink

Retired diamond exploration geologist. I spent my professional life looking for mineral deposits, found some, and also located a number of kimberlites in NSW and Western Australia. Exploration geology is the closest one can get to practicing the scientific method, mineral exploration always being concerned with finding anomalous geophysical or geochemical data, framing a model and explanation for the anomaly and then testing it with drilling or excavation. All scientific theories are ultimately false since they invariably involved explaining something with incomplete extant knowledge. Since no one is omniscient or knows everything, so too scientific theories which are solely limited to existing knowledge. Because the future always yields new data, scientific theories must change to be compatible with the new data. Thus a true scientist is never in love with any particular theory, always knowing that when the facts change, so too must he/she change their minds.
