More Geomagnetism

A previous muse of the origin of the geomagnetic field was posted here when I suggested the Van Allen Belt as a co-rotating torus of plasma is the probable cause of the geomagnetic field.  Except the Earth does not have a geomagnetic dipole field but a quadrapole field.

At the 2016 Electric Universe conference Dr. Michael Clarage presented the latest, simple, model of the Earth’s geomagnetic field and it is now recognised that there are two co-rotating belts of charged particles co-rotating with the Earth, an inner electrically positive torus and an outer larger, electrically negative torus.

Two counter-rotating belts would generate the known quadrupole geomagnetic field. In addition 70% of the Earth’s surface is comprised of oceans that are negatively charged, and would constitute another source of the geomagnetic field. If we then include the polar Birkeland currents which themselves are also generating a magnetic field, or fields, then these would be sufficient to explain the geomagnetic field.

About Louis Hissink

Retired diamond exploration geologist. I spent my professional life looking for mineral deposits, found some, and also located a number of kimberlites in NSW and Western Australia. Exploration geology is the closest one can get to practicing the scientific method, mineral exploration always being concerned with finding anomalous geophysical or geochemical data, framing a model and explanation for the anomaly and then testing it with drilling or excavation. All scientific theories are ultimately false since they invariably involved explaining something with incomplete extant knowledge. Since no one is omniscient or knows everything, so too scientific theories which are solely limited to existing knowledge. Because the future always yields new data, scientific theories must change to be compatible with the new data. Thus a true scientist is never in love with any particular theory, always knowing that when the facts change, so too must he/she change their minds.

I think I remember seeing or reading that there is an ephemeral third Van Allen belt surrounding the earth.
